This morning on the Breakfast Show, Ian played Christy Moore’s anti-Arthur’s Day song, "Arthur's Day".
There was more than a bit of a reaction from Breakfast Show listeners – surprisingly though it was 50/50.
Lots of people think Christy has made a very good living out of recording drinking songs over the years and are accusing him of double standards.
Others are saying that Christy’s dead right.
Read the reaction here:
- Christy has a back catalog of drinking songs but we're not allowed to drink while listening to them. Its very Hypocritical. Anthony
- Completely agree. This country is completely banjaxed with alcohol!! Guinness-diageo isn't even an irish company for effs sake. We're like a shower of dopey leprechauns dancing for a british company's ad execs. Martin in cork
- Did Christy not start his LONG career as a man very fond of Guinness... How the tide has turned. #realitycheck. Fergus
- Seems to me Christy's song writing ability left him many moons ago! Ken on limerick
- Arthur's day not the problem people's behaviour and attitude toward drink is
- Hi Ian. I'm a big Christy Moore fan, but I think he is over the top here. It's up to people if they drink or not. The entertainment is great. Kevin in the bus.
- That’s all we need, another dull song from Christy
- Totally agree wit Christie. Last year Cork city was like a war zone, terrible! Norma
- Hi Ian, another good example of Christy singing about something he knows nothing about! Arthurs Day is a very enjoyable day, celebrated responsibly in the main but let's look for the negative in everything - we are Irish after all!
- Christy's tirade against commercialism... Buy it now on iTunes!!!!
- Hey mr ian, wouldn't miss ur show, it cheers me up on a silly monday.. love chrsities song, its very true the words of his song.. No problem having a drink but some people take it to a new level. With 6 wkds for ten euro or 6 budwizer for ten euro, drink is super cheap and so accessible. They should increase the price of alcohol and decrease the price of good food. Enjoy ur day xx
- Here we go again. Something to have some fun with where the vast majority enjoy A Day responsibly for the music, social and some Guinness. Why are we listening to a reformed alcoholic? What else would he say? Maybe he didn't get an invite to play?
What do you think? Christy isn't the only well-known personality who has spoken out about the event. The Waterboys will also be releasing an anti-Arthur's Day song and author Marian Keyes made her feelings clear on Twitter:
...I am AGIN Arthurs Day! A marketing wheeze which tries to coat-tail on Irish identity and pride. #APoorShow

The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland has also attacked the upcoming event - read more
