Summer is around the corner (seriously, how quick is this year passing!?) and while many of us are running after that dream bikini bod, or simply looking to tone up, improve our health, or de-stress; the ladies of Today FM have been training hard in preparation to kick some Bank Holiday Monday ass.
Yup. In 54 days, 4 hours, 10 minutes and 56... no 55 seconds (but who’s counting?) we’ll be sweating out 10k, while aiming for that finish line on Fitzwilliam Square for the annual VHI Women’s Mini Marathon.
Dusting off the winter cobwebs to hit the ground running is no easy feat. And while we have visions of our tousled hair flowing in the wind, a fixated smile on our face, mastering the technique while our bum and tum tighten and transform into muscle, catching each breath with ease, while our bodies run in sync to the motivating tunes playing loudly inside our head, the reality is anything but.
Instead we gallop towards accomplishing another 1 out of 10k, confused about whether to breathe through our nose or mouth and panicking when catching flies instead of our breath. That smile turns to gritted teeth as we watch the pavement cautiously knowing well we are too much of a jinx not to fall today.
But we didn’t fall. And we won’t.
Instead we’ll keep going, feeling grateful for having the chance to do something worthwhile and feeling fantastic for doing do. We have the perfect reason to jog on and we look forward to joining the 40,000+ women on Monday 6 June, in a race towards the finish line.
Alison Curtis is one of the many girlos getting their sweat on at Today FM. Running the event in memory of the late and great Tony Fenton.
