Trade unions have formally accepted the public sector pay deal.

It gives civil servants a 6.5% pay increase.

The deal was hammered after a 19-hour marathon negotiation in August.

It will see a backdated 3% rise from February 2022, followed by 2% in March 2023 and then a further 1.5% or €750 in October 2023, whichever is greater.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions' President Kevin Callinan says there was a strong showing in favour of the deal.

All of the unions concerned have accepted the proposal.

There were concerns, however, that the increase does not match the rate of inflation which recent CSO estimates put it at over 8%.

There was a deadline of today for unions to accept or reject the deal.
