A company in Co Mayo has been fined €500,000 following a fatal accident at a quarry.
The fine was imposed on Harrington Concrete and Quarries today at Castlebar Circuit Court for three separate breaches of health and safety legislation.
The company earlier pleaded guilty to the offences.
According to the Health and Safety Authority, the prosecution arose after a fatal accident on June 11th 2015 at Carrowscoilta Quarry in Ballyhaunis.
An employee of the company, Mr. Joseph Harrington, died after he fell into an inadequately guarded stone crusher at the quarry.
Mark Cullen, Assistant Chief Executive of the Health and Safety Authority said it's vital that employers provide safe plant and machinery and ensure there are appropriate safe systems of work.
Mr Cullen also said:
The failures that contributed to this incident are clear and the consequences for Mr Harrington and his family were tragic.
