As marriage proposals go, this one is a little more intellectual than most!

According to The Guardian today, Matthew Dick (oi - no laughing you, down the back!) a 38-year-old lawyer and cryptic crossword enthusiast, arranged for the Times crossword to contain hidden messages to his girlfriend of two and a half years, Delyth Hughes, on her birthday. Awww!

Hector read this heart-warming story and the listeners of the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show jumped on board and regaled us with stories of their romantic (and some not so romantic!) proposals:

Hector - I proposed in the top field after baling hay. Paul from Drawda on way to Skibb

Hector, I proposed to my husband on the last leap year day. I was in Germany and he was over here. As he is in IT I made a video. I then asked all our close friends to send me a picture holding a white piece of paper and photoshopped the proposal on the pieces of paper. I then made a video with pictures of us and then to the song matrimony I proposed to him with the photoshopped pictures (last picture was me) – and a week later I flew over and he proposed to me! Lovely memories.

Hi Hector, my husband popped the question at Gally Head lighthouse in Co Cork - he had even managed to hire a photograph to capture the moment... so he has it on film that I tried to run away!!! (I came back and said yes!)

Hector - we got engaged on the observation deck of the Empire State building in New York. We were there on our first anniversary together. We are now married 7 years. From Graham in Laois

Hi Hector. While in Borneo my now husband suggested a game of scrabble (the magnetic travel one). I opened up the board and without even looking, said “we left the letters on from last time” and swiped them off. When I looked up he was on his knees looking gutted. Felt so bad that next time he proposed covered in blood after falling off a scooter I had to say yes.

I had a great plan for my marriage proposal. I had planned to pop the question on the mountain peak in Andorra while on skiing. But that failed miserably after the first drinking night over there – so I just ended up asking the question in the bedroom so all my good intentions went out the window.
But she still said yes and still happily married to Aine! William in Limerick

Hi Hector, I was proposed to in New York. Romantic you say, Empire State? Statue of Liberty? No it was back at the hotel after a feed of pints at an Irish pub. I still said yes. Happily married 10 years later. Catherine in Dublin

My fiancé proposed in our home, using our mementos like ticket stubs, programs, photos etc from all of our dates over the years to spell it out on the floor of the living room! It was incredible to look back over all of our shared memories at that special time!'

Hector I got KT Tunstall to ask my wife on my behalf at Sligo live in 2012. We are now very happily married with a beautiful 9 month old daughter. Brian Sligo.

Hey Hector - my better half always wanted to see the Northern Lights so I took her to Norway and proposed on a frozen beach in the Arctic on New Year’s Day under the lights! It was magical, she totally wasn't expecting it! -Shane, Cork

I got a baby-gro printed for my 6-month old son with “mammy will you marry daddy and be a White like Ellie and me?” on holidays in Westport. He had the ring on a ribbon around his neck. She is now my beautiful wife. Des White from Limerick.

My hubbie proposed on a gondola under the Rialto Bridge in Venice. The driver didn't even bat an eyelid he probably has about 2 a day!
