What is DEBRA Ireland?
DEBRA is the charity that gives comfort and hope for children and adults living with EB (Epidermolysis bullosa).
EB is a distressing, painful and incurable genetic skin condition that causes the skin, both inside and out, to blister and separate as the slightest touch. The skin blisters have to be lanced and dressed every day and this can take up to three hours.
Children with EB are described as 'Butterfly Children' because their skin is as fragile as the wings of a butterfly.
What is the challenge?
For EB patients, every day is a challenge, so we’re asking listeners to take on a small challenge in their honour. The Kerry Challenge is a 75km trek over 3 days this June, 20th-22nd and, yes, some blisters may appear, but whilst our blisters will heal, when you have EB some blisters will never go away.
The Kerry Challenge has always been about friendships, fun, craic and laughter. This year it’s also about a very special person Emma Fogarty who’s celebrating her 30th Birthday down there. Emma has Recessive Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (EB) - one of the major forms of EB. People with this type of EB tend to have a shorter life expectancy so turning 30 is a huge milestone for Emma.
This year, do something you’ll never forget; challenge yourself and make a difference to people affected with EB like Emma.
