The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show received an email this morning which we put out to our listeners - and they didn't fail to disappoint. Have a read:
Hi there.
Wondering if any of your listeners can help me. Have just literally split up with my partner after nearly eight years together. I need to get away and am lucky that I have holidays the second and third week of August. Can anyone advise me how to book a solo holiday, short notice, that's not going to break the bank!! I'm 35 by the way. Thanks so much. Anon.
I'm 34 and heading on a solo cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line on 2nd Aug to Western Med. There is no single supplement and you have you own cabin and solo bar area...check it out!
Single holiday: I have been to Canary Island twice by myself to quieter locations. Pick an apartment with sun facing balcony. This will allow sunbathing in private. Can have breakfast and lunch in apartment. Eat dinner out early 7pm before the couples come out. You get the best seat and ideal for people watching! Bring loads of books. Do some day trips. Very easy relaxing sun holiday. From Helen in Cork.
Iano – who says it has to be a trip to foreign parts ? What’s wrong with chillaxing in Ireland (after all, we DO have Tramore, Galway, Ring of Kerry etc)? Dave.
G Adventures have trips to everywhere in world! Great fun trips for solo travel. Went with them to China - it was great. Met loads of people. Guide was great. Different pricing for different levels of comfort. Go for it! Helen
That girl should go on a camping safari trip in Africa. Most of them are solo travellers. They are great fun!
Hi Ian, a suggestion for the lady who wants to do the solo holiday - why not take the Orient Express? I think there's an equivalent trip in Canada as well. What a marvellous memory to make. Shannon
Join up with a travel group. I went solo to the other side of world as part of 12 person group. It was half couples, half singles - all similar age range. Fantastic experience for solo.
Hi Ian, try sailing with Glenuna on Heir Island in West Cork! Trevor
Walk a stretch of the Casino de Santiago. With 2 weeks, recommend Leon to Santiago. Fly to Madrid, train to Leon. Fly home from Santiago.
Tell your listener to go and walk the first stage of the Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain for her solo holiday. You don't have to be super fit, everyone does it at their own pace. She'll meet so many wonderful people from all over the world. It's an amazing experience and also perfect for a little soul searching.
Tell that lady I would recommend Lisbon for her hols. Cheap, compact and friendly city and you can head up the coast. I'm a single lady too and have travelled on my own. Enjoy you'll have a great time
I broke up with my ex last year after 10 years. My first solo holiday was organised a week before I left. I jumped onto the ferry to France and drove to Germany and explored there. It was great. I know exactly what that lady is going through (the worst being everybody saying Are You Alright) – Seanie
