On this morning's show we decided to find the definitive answer as to what the perfect "Pointy Song" is, once and for all!
"What's a Pointy Song?" we sense you asking - well this is a song that whenever you hear it, the digits of each of your hands are no longer under your control, especially your index fingers. It's an involuntary reaction of greatness you end up embracing, and push to the absolute limit. Embedded in your subconscious, and passed down through generations of dancing DNA. You basically point at everyone (and we mean EVERYONE).
Primarily a dancefloor move, it has been known to happen anywhere music is played, i.e., in the Kitchen, on the street, at work, on public transport etc.
It usually involves a firm bite of your lower lip, a shake of the hair/headbanging, a look of wonder followed by some smug facial expressions, a slightly aggressive demeanour with anyone within 10ft of you, and a euphoric sense of freedom throughout your whole body screaming "I'M ALIVE!!" into your very core.
Ohh and LOTS of sweat.
We had a huge reaction to this, because no matter how young or old you are, everyone is guilty of this, at least once, every night they're out. Then if you're at a wedding *blesses oneself*, good luck to ya, because it's pointy central.
We narrowed it down to a comprehensive Top Five list, with some listener's comments to add to the feel. Here they are:
5 - Blondie - One Way Or Another
"Im gonna get ya get ya get ya get ya..." - Trish O'Leary
4 - Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor
"Can't beat a bit of pointing to AM of a weekend" - Jack in Sligo
3 - Blues Brothers - Everybody Needs Somebody
"Blues Brothers, everybody needs somebody.....I need YOU YOU YOU" Helen Brown
2 - Mark McCabe - Maniac 2000
(Chosen by Louise Markey, Anita Hennebry, Andrea O'Callaghan, Áine Morrissey, Sarah O'Sullivan-O'Driscoll etc. etc. etc...)
*DRUMROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL..................*
1 - Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer
"Hi Ian, I always thought the ultimate pointy song was Livin on a prayer, especially WOOOOOOOOOOAHHHH we're half way there, OOOOOOOOOHOOOOOH livin on a prayer....." - Damien in Sligo
"Bon Jovie, Livin on a prayer, always a pointing session during the chorus! Love it" - Ann en route to Maynooth
So there ya have it - the nation's selection. But what do you think? Maybe you have something to top this? My own personal preference is "You're The One That I want" from Grease - I get cramps in my fingers whenever that tune is on (plus I get to pretend I'm Danny Zuko).
If you want to tell us your opinion, simply send an email to breakfast@todayfm.com and we'll see what we think. Maybe we'll get your point? (haw haw).
