A cab driver in the UK was very upset over the weekend when Chris Evans, who has just signed a £3 million deal with the BBC, tipped him just 40p for a £20 cab fare. Was the driver just in his complaint? Hector put it to the people of Ireland and the listener of the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show was quite a mixed reaction when it came to tipping...
Tips must be earned, not automatically expected - otherwise what’s the point? The wages and prices in America much lower because of tipping. The service in Ireland does not come close to that of America - Sean in Cork
I don't tip. I work minimum wage in a non service job. People are getting at least minimum wage. I can't justify tipping when I get a rare chance to go for meal. Tipping was introduced in States when service industry were not paid properly.
Why tip? There are many jobs in the service industry that never get tipped. Why should some get tips? Pay proper salaries. Kelly
I'm a hairdresser, so I always tip 10% on every service I get...don't want to upset the tipping gods
I tip usually 10% in restaurants. I worked as a young wan in a hairdressers, tips made a huge difference to my take home pay. I always tip who washed my hair, not the stylist. Irene O'Neill Celbridge
Hector, if you’re out for dinner it's a 10% tip and once in a while it pays to tip your barber. But we are most definitely not a nation of tippers.
I had no problem tipping in America as the service is outstanding. If the customer service was at the same standard here I would tip more often! If the attendant has really good customer service or the service in the hairdressers for example is really good I will tip! Jo
Always tip your barber Hector, they have your social life for the next few weeks in their hands...keep your barber happy show some barber love! John in Fat Tonys barbers Galway :-)
Hi Hector - I waitressed in America, so have no problem tipping if it's good service. However the Americans work for it and some do here but I find a lot here assume you tip despite the service! I won't tip if bad service.
Hector, as a rule I will leave 10% as a tip, as regards Taxi drivers if the fair is 10e or 20e I don't tip but if it's 8e or 28e, I would round up. Last Saturday night got a taxi from town - it cost 40e but because the driver was so interesting conversation-wise, I rounded up to 50e. Depends on who you meet and how you get on really - if the service is shite or the driver is grumpy then no tip
Just back from Florida Hector. Staff on a dollar an hour. 15% to 20% is standard. Staff basic here is a little better so tipping is only given in Ireland when deserved. Irish mentality
