There are few things more intimidating than meeting the in-laws for the first time.
At the weekend, Mark Ronson announced that he'd married Meryl Streep’s daughter Grace Gummer. Now that’s pressure!
But it doesn’t take having Meryl Streep as a mother-in-law to get people sweating over making a good first impression.
On The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show, Ian asked the people of Ireland to share their first encounters with their partner’s family.
Here are some of our favourites….
The first time I met my now mother-in-law, I kissed her in the lips! We both went in for a cheek kiss but ended up on the lips. Very embarrassing - Ciara
First time I met my father-in-law was after a night of beer. We were only 17 at the time and he was taking us to Tramore for the day. Half way there, and the roads not the best, I was feeling unwell. Nowhere to pull up so my head went out the window and I got sick all over the side of the car. He then had to stop for petrol and the fuel cap was full of vomit. 19 years on and he loves me to bits - Dermot
My 4 year old nephew got out of the bath without the knowledge of my Mam or I and ran into the living room where my now husband was waiting for me. My nephew in the nip jumped on him 😲 😂 - Cathy
First time I met my in-laws, I was in my partners bed! I was out with him and some girlfriends I was staying with left without me and I couldn’t contact them so he was like look you’ll just have to stay in mine. I eventually gave in because I’d no other choice 😂🙈 only for his Mam to walk into the room to see if he’d come home 🤦🏻♀️. I wanted the ground to swallow me up! 4 years later though still together 😂😂😂 - Ailbhe
Met my in-laws at the airport when my now-husband and I came back for a visit from my homeland of Barbados. I was so nervous, but when I met them they told me I was the first girl he ever brought to meet them! And I relaxed from there onwards. 6 years later we live here in Ireland and visit whenever we can with our two sons and dog 🥰
