Just hearing the soundtrack to Wanderly Wagon brings us right back to when we were children, and how GREAT TV was back then! This week, our competition is sponsored by Irish Life, and it got us thinking about all aspects of life in Ireland. We asked the listeners of the Breakfast Show what their favourite Irish Children's TV Show was - and we were inundated with texts! Everyone who sent a text to 53102 with a suggestion was put into a draw to potentially win €1000. Here's a sample of some of the texts we received - wasn't TV great back in the day?!
My favourite childhood programme was Wanderly Wagon...I loved it! O'Brien and Judge and Mr Crow - Godmother was a bit bossy but Slightly Bonkers was brilliant! Ethel Aherne
Ian, does anyone remember Rimini Riddle? It was on Saturday mornings in the 90's, Aunt Vera and Uncle Quentin who was the baddy. Claudia Carroll was in it. So bad it was effing brilliant, I used to get up early to watch it with my son. Jean
Used to mind kids for years – Dempsey’s Den, then after Iano, The Den were big favourites for years - Noreen Marnane
Bosco...especially when he went down into his house!!! Loved it! Emma Claffey
Bosco with Flaherty the dog and Preachain the crow!! Absolutely brilliant stuff! - Michelle Meehan
Best Irish TV show for kids has got to be Dempsey's Den which became The Den. I’m 43 and I remember rushing home from school to watch it - and I was a teenager, not a kid. Thanks for all the laughs! Shivers x
Anything Goes on a Saturday morning 30 years ago! I used have butterflies in my stomach, waking early to watch it - ah the memories! The Little Rascals & Ed the talking horse ! Those were the days !! Tess
Fave Irish TV shows- Bosco, Wanderly Wagon, Fortycoats. Feel sorry for today's children – they’re deprived of these programmes. Olga
Has to be Bosco! Who could forget the Tongue Twisters and the Magic Door?! Sandra Bogan
I always liked that show where Don Conroy showed you how to draw. My drawing never looked like his! Think he started on The Den! Rachel in Dublin
Showing my age now Ian, but I loved Wanderley Wagon. Thought it was the best thing and remember they used to have the "wagon" parked outside RTE in Donnybrook! Maggie
Make And Do with Mary! Pipe-cleaners - what were they anyway?!
Bouli was def the best Irish programme, I remember everyone in school would go around singing the theme tune to it. Chris in Cork
There are so many great Irish kids TV programmes. They certainly don't make them like they used to! Wanderly Wagon, Anything Goes, Pajo's Junkbox, Forty Coats and of course Bosco. Happy happy memories watching TV after school and on Saturday mornings. With the kings Ian Dempsey and Ray D'Arcy bringing great joy and laughter in between everything. God I loved being an irish kid!
