This morning, the richest bass players in the world were being talked about in many newspapers and music websites - here’s a list of the Top 5 earners:

  1. Paul McCartney
  2. Gene Simmons
  3. Sting
  4. Roger Waters
  5. Adam Clayton

It got the team on The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show thinking that those guys on the list may be the richest but who’s the best bass player ever? You told us what you thought:

Dermot O’Rourke - Phil Lynott

Gary Whyte - Gerry McAvoy from Rory Gallagher and Band of Friends. Cliff Williams from AC/DC

Super Kario - Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers. He is incredibly skilled across multiple genres producing the funkiest bass of the past 30 years.

Catherine Collins - Kim Deal, formally of the Pixies..Irreplaceable

Bernard Carlton - Me!! - (big old statement there, Bernard - show us some proof!)

Tamzen Malone - Bernard Edwards from Chic. That is reason enough thank you

Dallan O’Reilly - Dusty from ZZ TOP.

Martin  Fleming - Peter Hook :)

John Callanan -  Peter Gabriel/King Crimson/David Bowie/John Lennon/Laurie Anderson/Dire Straits/Pink Floyd/Paul Simon to name but a few...

Gavin Woods - Cliff Burton- Metallica

Dee O’Leary - It has to be Philo....

And possibly the most detailed, emphatic answer we’ve ever received on the Breakfast Show came from Nigel Hegarty :

Carol Kaye, session musician who created some of the best known bass lines in history.
Cliff Burton, original Metallica bassist, a shame to die so young as you only have to listen to 'Anasthesia - Pulling Teeth' to appreciate just how good the guy was.
Paul McCartney - naturally, just one of the smoothest players ever, but still quality.
John Paul Jones - Led Zeppelin wouldn't have been the same band without this guy. Hugely under-rated.
Victor Wooten - Look him up. Couldn't possibly say anything else.
Geddy Lee- driving force behind Rush, and what a voice.
John Entwhistle - What a player. Simply ridiculous what he done, with his own unique style.
Jaco Pistorious - Jazz fusion wouldn't be the same without him.
Les Claypool - Primus are ridiculous. Everything about them is ridiculous, and this is the main guy behind the ridiculous. Just class.
Larry Graham - the boss. Just ridiculous, and the godfather of slap bass.
