Some were wondering whether my Today FM colleague John Duggan had lost the plot by backing Roscommon for this year's provincial senior football title in the west. But successive league silverware for the Rossies, has John Evans in a great place heading into the summer with a team that can create great scores.
It cranks up a gear with weekend with Galway seeking their 10th successive championship win over Leitrim in the past 20 years, having lost their previous two clashes in 1993-94.
The counties last met in the championship in 2008 when Galway won the Connacht semi-final by 2-14 to 1-13 in Pearse Stadium. Padraic Joyce was Galway’s top scorer on 1-4 while Cormac Bane scored 1-2. Emlyn Mulligan scored 0-10 for Leitrim.
Galway already have a championship win behind them this year, having beaten New York by 2-18 to 0-8 in Gaelic Park last Sunday week, having finished fourth in Division 2 of the Allianz Football League (4 wins, 3 defeats).
Leitrim finished fourth in Division 4 with three wins, two defeats and two draws.
Galway are seeking their first Connacht title since 2008 this year while Leitrim last won the title in 1994.
Sunday’s winners will play Mayo in the Connacht semi-final on June 14 in Carrick-on-Shannon or Pearse Stadium.
That should be a right day out. Some of the personalities in the west have been sharing their views. Happy punting for those looking to prove Today FM's tipster wrong!
