There was a time when the GAA's League campaigns were a bit like the auditions for the more serious stuff later in the summer but that day is gone. It's difficult for the All Ireland winners to get straight back into things after their celebrations of Sam and Liam but things today are better for September winners than previous seasons when the Leagues were divided into games before and after Christmas. In saying that it's interesting to note how the year is shaping up already.
Managers try to mix the process of involving some fresh faces with trying to stay in touch with the business end of the Allianz Leagues.
Hard to believe that a relegation playoff now looms for the reigning Allianz league and All Ireland senior hurling champions after Kilkenny's Trip to Tipp saw them suffer a 12 point defeat in Thurles.
The Cats got off to the ideal start - Jonjo Farrell pounced on a rebound off the upright direct from throw in to put the noresiders a goal up but 1-7 from Seamus Callanan and 1-2 from Niall o Meara put Tipp in the driving seat despite the best efforts of cats captain Richie Hogan who contributed 10 points to the Black and Amber cause.
Things may be different when September comes and the Ballyhale lads return but any hard fought victory can expect to be celebrated in song, as is the Irish way. Interesting to note what dittys some of the games top stars would rattle off if they had the mike!
Which one of these lads will be leading their county in song in the Hogan Stand in September?!
