UEFA has approved an increase in the amount distributed to the participating teams for the UEFA Women’s European Championship in England in 2022.

The 16 qualified teams will share a total of €16 million, double the amount of the total prize money of €8 million distributed at the tournament in 2017, which was staged in the Netherlands.

The financial distribution will include increased guaranteed amounts and performance-based bonuses for the group stage.

The tournament was originally scheduled for 2021 but was pushed back due to the men's European Championship and Tokyo Olympics being rescheduled as a result of the pandemic.

England will host the tournament at 10 stadiums from July 6th-31st next year with the final set to be played at Wembley.

Italy received a total of €34 million for winning the men's European Championship this summer, with €10 million of their total earnings coming from the win over England in the final.

UEFA increased the prize money on offer for the tournament to €371 million.

In addition, the UEFA Executive Committee approved the introduction of a club benefits programme, for the first time, making available a significant total amount of €4.5 million to reward European clubs releasing players for the UEFA Women’s Euro final tournament for their contribution to the success of the event.

European football's governing body has made the change as part of its women's football strategy, Time For Action, intended to ensure more money is distributed across the women's game.

The UEFA Executive Committee met in Chisinau, Moldova on Wednesday and full details of the financial distribution scheme will be made available in the coming days.
