Huddersfield have made Tommy Elphick their first summer signing since being relegated from the Premier League.
The former Aston Villa defender has joined as a free agent on a two-year contract.
The experienced centre-back has made nearly 400 appearances across the top three divisions of English football.
Terriers' head-coach Jan Siewert feels the veteran defender will be a key player as they rebuild in the Championship.
“Tommy’s arrival is a fantastic start to our summer transfer business.
“There was a lot of interest in Tommy from several other clubs, which is totally understandable; it is rare that a player of his quality is available as a free agent. We’ve stayed patient and worked very hard to bring him here and I would like to thank the Chairman, the Chief Executive and our Head of Recruitment, Josh Marsh, for all the work they have put into this deal.
“Tommy adds a lot of knowledge about the Sky Bet Championship to our squad. It’s also clear from our meetings and from his career that he has real leadership qualities, which is an important asset.”
Elphick feels they have the squad to mount a challenge for a swift return to the Premier League.
“First of all, we need to restore that confidence, get back to winning ways and get back into that habit.
“I believe with the playing squad and the staff we’ve got we can have an enjoyable and successful year.
“I will promise that I’ll give everything and try to get us back to the top end of the table, winning games, getting smiles back on fans’ faces and having that connection.
“Something I’ve prided myself on is not leaving anything behind and I’m certain I’m not going to do that now.”
