FAI chief executive John Delaney had a good feeling that Dublin would be named as one of the host venues for the 2020 European Championships but was still overjoyed when UEFA President Michel Platini made the announcement in Geneva.
The Aviva Stadium will hold four games, three group fixtures and a last 16 encounter. The finals and the semi finals are to be held at Wembley. Munich, Baku, St. Petersburg and Rome will each host a quarter final.
John Delaney says the tournament organisers were very impressed with Dublin’s staging of the 2011 Europa Final. He regards it as a massive boost for the long term future of football in Ireland and told Ross Lindsay that is could help the IRFU’s bid for the 2023 Rugby World Cup. He says many people deserve credit.
