Sexton nearing Leinster return as surgery ends Connors' season

Jonathan Sexton is edging closer to a return to action with Leinster.

The Ireland captain has increased his training load with the province, and resumes contact training this week.

Sexton has not played since sustaining the latest in a line of head injuries in April.

He took a knock to the head a quarter of an hour into Leinster's Heineken Champions Cup quarter-final win over Exeter Chiefs. The 35-year old was substituted 12-minutes later.

Concern over his ability to endure a gruelling tour of South Africa, saw Sexton omitted from Warren Gatland's Lions squad.

But ahead of Friday's Rainbow Cup game away to Glasgow Warriors, comes the news of Sexton's impending return. It's thought the game at Scotstoun could come too soon, however.

Leinster have confirmed that Will Connors' season is over.

The Ireland international flanker has undergone surgery on a knee issue, having last featured for the province in January's Guinness PRO14 win over Munster.

Leinster say that both Caelan Doris and Jimmy O'Brien came through the round-3 win over Ulster unscathed having only returned from injury.

Scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park will be assessed prior to the game in Scotland having recovered from a hamstring injury.

Thomas Clarkson (hamstring), Ciarán Frawley (shoulder), Rhys Ruddock (calf), Harry Byrne (hamstring), Jack Dunne (ankle), Dan Leavy (knee), Adam Byrne (hamstring), Conor O’Brien (knee) and Max Deegan (knee) all remain sidelined.
