The days of Milan's famous old San Siro stadium are numbered after the local council dubbed it "not culturally relevant".
Plans are afoot to build one of two designs to house both AC Milan and Inter.
Milan mayor Giuseppe Sala originally didn't want to see the old stadium completely demolished, but the clubs say maintaining it will no longer be possible.
Opened in 1926, the San Siro has undergone numerous facelifts since with its most dramatic coming ahead of the 1990 World Cup.
Both of the potential designs for the new stadium call for the old one to be torn down.
"Its structure has been modified many times during its life and cannot be expanded further to the East due to unmovable property borders", their proposal website states.
The local council appear to agree with letting the venue of four European Cup finals being razed to the ground.
Documents obtained from the council by La Repubblica state, "it is, at present, an architectural artefact in which the remnants of the original stadium of 1925-'26 and the expansion of 1937-'39 are completely residual with respect to subsequent adjustments made in the second half of the twentieth century and therefore not subject to the "heritage protection" provisions since they do not date back over 70 years.
Plainly speaking, the redevelopments - particularly those leading up to 1990 - have deprived the building of any historic standing.
The decision paves the way for agreement between AC Milan and Inter and the council for the building of a new stadium on the current site.
The area on which the stadium currently stands will be transformed into a park / sports centre, while a hotel, shopping centre and recreational spaces have both been promised.
Populous - the company behind the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and the Parc Olympique Lyonnais - have presented one design called 'The Cathedral'.
The other design has been put forward by MANICA/Sportium who are behind the Allegiant Stadium in Nevada, which is soon to be home to the Raiders NFL franchise.
Their's is entitled 'The Rings of Milano'.
