Cristiano Ronaldo tests positive for COVID-19

Cristiano Ronaldo has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Juventus forward has been forced to withdraw from the Portugal squad to face Sweden in the UEFA Nations League on Wednesday.

Ronaldo played the full 90-minutes of his country's scoreless draw with France in Paris on Sunday night.

The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the news of the 35-year old's positive test on Tuesday afternoon.

They say he is asymptomatic, feeling well and has already begun his period of isolation.

The remaining members of the Portugal squad all underwent further testing after learning of Ronaldo's diagnosis. All tests returned negative and the Sweden game goes ahead as planned in Alvalade.

Training was originally scheduled for Tuesday morning, but the positive case led to it being held back until 4pm, Irish time.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star has - to date - made a record number of appearances for his country (167), and is also their record goalscorer with 101.

The lack of any other positives in the Portugal camp would appear a major stroke of fortune.

On Monday, Ronaldo posted a selfie with the rest of the squad at dinner with the caption, "A squad united!"

Portugal have won two and drawn one of their first three games in League A Group 3 of the Nations League.

The scoreless draw in Paris on Sunday saw their first dropped points of the campaign.
