PSG lining up eye-watering financial package to lure Messi

Paris Saint-Germain are set to offer Lionel Messi an eye-watering €40million deal.

The Ligue 1 side have reportedly been negotiating with Messi's father, Jorge, since Thursday night when it was revealed he would not be re-signing for Barcelona.

La Liga's financial constraints have prevented Barça from tying down arguably their greatest ever player to a new two-year deal.

But Qatar-backed PSG are clearly healthy enough financially, even accounting for financial fair play, to land the biggest fish in the ocean.

L'Équipe have reported that Messi is being offered a €40million euro package for a three-year contract, with the last of those years optional.

They say every department at Paris Saint-Germain - from management, marketing and communications - are now in "battle positions" in an effort to secure Messi's signature.

Other deals have been mooted, including late interest from Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich. Despite protestations that they're not interested, a deal with City Group is also believed to be on the table.

On Friday, PSG head coach Mauricio Pochettino made no secret of his hope to see his fellow Argentine move to the French capital.

"We are focused on the start of the season," Pochettino said, "At the same time, the club are working quietly but strongly to improve the team in order to achieve the goals set for this season.

He added, "Messi is a player for whom we all know what happened on Thursday, I'm not going to say the opposite.

"But I think we are focused on winning against Troyes, to have a good game and to start the season well.

"At the same time, [sporting director] Leonardo and our president [Nasser Al-Khelaifi] are working to improve the team."
