Muirfield votes to admit female golfers

Female members have been formally invited to join the world's oldest golf club at Muirfield for the first time in its 275-year history.

The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, who are based at the East Lothian Links, voted to change their controversial policy barring women two-years ago.

That decision saw Muirfield removed as a venue for the Open by the organising body the R&A and a 2016 vote fell just short of the required majority to allow women to join.

This week's vote received around 80% backing from a total of 621 votes.

After receiving applications and assessing them through their traditional lengthy procedure, the club has now invited 12 ladies, two of them from outside the United Kingdom, to take up membership from next Monday.

HCEG captain Alistair Campbell says it's a landmark moment for Muirfield.

"It is my great pleasure to announce that 12 women have been formally invited to join the HCEG this month.

"This marks a milestone in the club's illustrious history, and we look forward to welcoming all of our new members to share in the great values and traditions of our club.

"This year marks the 275th anniversary of the club's first recorded golf competition," Campbell added.

"We are proud of our club's rich history but equally excited for its future and the part all of our new members will play in the club's cherished traditions."
