Keith Earls could be out of action for up to 4 months having undergone surgery on his right knee. The 26 year old had been struggling with the ongoing problem picked up while on international duty in August. It had been hoped that he would make his Munster return in the Pro 12 derby against Leinster, but suffered a further knock last week.
It is a big blow for the Province as they prepare for the trip to the Aviva Stadium. Peter O'Mahony and Damien Varley have returned to light training following shoulder and foot problems, but are unlikely to feature this week.
Coach Anthony Foley told Ross Lindsay that he may bring in a short term replacement for Earls.
