Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill wanted six points heading to Gelsenkirchen to face Germany. The Boys in Green hammered Gibraltar 7-0 at the Aviva to make it 2 wins from 2 in Group D of the Euro 2016 qualifiers.
Robbie Keane scored a hat-trick in the first 18 minutes to end the game as a contest and he also became the all time leading scorer in European qualifiers.
James McClean scored two while Wes Hoolahan was also on target and the other goal was an own goal from the Gibraltar keeper Jordan Perez.
That was the easy bit but now comes the hard part – World Champions Germany in their own back yard.
The Germans will be even more determined after losing 2-0 away to Poland so the Irish players could be on the end of another defeat to Joachim Loew’s side.
Ireland lost 6-1 at home to Germany in the last campaign and they were beaten 3-0 in Germany but Martin O’Neill says the players have to forget about those games:
The Germans have lost a few members of their World Cup winning team because of retirement and they’ll also be without Mesut Ozil due to injury.
They’re not use to losing games either but Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane doesn’t think the Germans will panic:
