Ireland missed out on a place in the quarter finals of the Cricket World Cup after a seven wicket defeat to Pakistan in Adelaide. Phil Simmons side needed a win to advance to the last eight although a draw would have been enough to finish ahead of West Indies in pool B.
Ireland won the toss and decided to bat first and when captain William Porterfield hit a century they were on course to post a decent total. But the last six wickets fell for 55 runs and Ireland set Pakistan a target of 238 to book a place in the knockout stages.
Their openers Ahmed Shehzad and Sarfraz Ahmed reached a century partnership in the 19th over and Shehzad went on to make a century which sent Pakistan on their way to a seven wicket win with 23 balls to spare.
Ireland finish fifth in Pool B, behind West Indies on net run-rate while Pakistan will play Australia in Adelaide on Friday.
