Henderson convenes captains meeting as opposition to Super League grows

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has called a meeting of his fellow Premier League skippers to discuss the Super League proposals.

There is mounting disquiet among players at the six breakaway Premier League clubs regarding the rebel competition.

On Monday night at Leeds, Liverpool's stand-in captain James Milner told Sky Sports, "In my personal opinion, I don't like it, and hopefully it doesn't happen.

"For the same reasons as everybody else that have been talking about over the last day. It has been difficult for us with our game, trying to prepare for it.

"I can only imagine what else has been said about it and I would probably agree with most of it."

It's reported that Manchester United captain Harry Maguire confronted club executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward following a Super League briefing.

On Tuesday afternoon, Maguire's teammate Marcus Rashford tweeted a picture of a banner at Old Trafford bearing the Matt Busby quote, "Football is nothing without fans".

The Daily Mail say that Henderson's captains roundtable will include representatives of clubs inside and outside the Super League bubble.

Last year saw the 30-year old Liverpool skipper spearhead the Players Together initiative which was a means of players donating funds to the NHS during the pandemic's first big bite.

They said it was an effot to: "create a voluntary initiative, separate to any other club and league conversations that can help get much needed funds to those that need it right now."

Henderson's voice is one of the most respected in the Premier League, and his decision to call a meeting will be seen as further dissent from Anfield to the Super League plans.

Manager Jurgen Klopp did not seem keen on the idea when questioned at Elland Road on Monday night. Meanwhile, a planned briefing from Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan to club staff on Tuesday was cancelled following events in Yorkshire.
