I know everyone is looking forward to next weekend’s blockbuster fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao so perhaps some people were not aware that there was a heavyweight title bout on in New York last night.
Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko retained his title for the 18th time with a comfortable points decision win over Bryant Jennings – the judges scored it 118-109, 116-111 and 116-111.
To save you the bother of watching the entire fight here are the " highlights "
Just over 17,000 turned up to Madison Square Garden but I can’t imagine too many Irish boxing fans stayed up to watch it.
It’s a far cry from the days of when Mohammed Ali was the biggest sportsman on the planet and the Heavyweight division was the one to watch.
Even when I was growing up I can remember Mike Tyson against the likes of Frank Bruno, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis.
Wladimir Klitschko can only beat who’s put in front of him and Jennings has only been boxing since 2009.
Klitschko has had 27 world title fights and when I watch them it reminds me of this from the Simpsons:
Let's hope for the sake of the heavyweight division that the likes of Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder can spark a bit of interest.
And as for Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, roll on May 2nd.
