Harry Maguire a doubt for Europa League final with ankle injury

Harry Maguire is in a race to be fit for this summer's European Championships.

The Manchester United defender suffered an ankle injury in Sunday's Premier League win away to Aston Villa.

Maguire came away from a challenge with Anwar El Ghazi with ligament damage to his left ankle.

Unsurprisingly, he was a spectator for United's game with Leicester City at Old Trafford for which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a whopping ten changes.

Maguire arrived on crutches with his left leg in a supportive boot.

Prior to his substitution at Villa Park, Maguire had played every minuted of Premier League action for United following his arrival from Leicester.

He's likely to miss the remaining games of the season with Liverpool, Wolves and Fulham. But Solskjaer remains hopeful Maguire will be fit to play Villareal in the Europa League final on May 26 in Gdansk.

"He's obviously had the scans and the good news is there is no fracture," the United boss told MUTV prior to Tuesday's game.

"[There's] Ligament damage but hopefully we will see him again this season. Hopefully, he'll be ready for the final."

While Solskjaer is putting up a confident front, England manager Gareth Southgate will be sweating over Maguire's fitness.

He played every minute of England's Euro 2020 qualifying campaign, and played the full 90 in the recent World Cup qualifier wins over Albania and Poland, scoring in the latter. Southgate is able to name a larger 26-man squad for the finals which for them begin against Croatia at Wembley on June 13.

Solskjaer made ten changes to his side for the Leicester game, with an eye on the visit of Liverpool in 48-hours' time.

Only Mason Greenwood was retained from the win at Villa, with Premier League debuts handed to Amad Diallo and Anthony Elanga.
