Hamilton facing FIA investigation over Breonna Taylor t-shirt

F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton is being investigated by the FIA for wearing a political t-shirt on the podium at yesterday's Tuscan Grand Prix.

He sported a shirt with the message 'Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor' on the front.

Hamilton also finished his post-race interview by saying "Justice for Breonna Taylor."

Ms Taylor, who was 26, died in March in Kentucky after being shot by three plainclothes police officers who’d entered her home.

Hamilton has been a near solitary strong black voice in a white-dominated sport during recent discussions sparked by the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers on May 25.

The 35-year old said F1 needed to "do so much more" in the fight against racism and inequality after a botched attempt to support the Black Lives Matter movement at July's Hungarian Grand Prix.

His Mercedes team have publicly backed Hamilton's Breonna Taylor t-shirt, replying to several Twitter critiques by pointing out, "We're not bringing politics into F1, these are human rights issues that we are trying to highlight and raise awareness of. There's a big difference."

US Open women's champion Naomi Osaka was roundly praised for wearing the name of a victim of racial violence for every match to her run to the title at Flushing Meadows.

But now Hamilton is facing action from motorsport's governors for a similar stance.

He wrote on Instagram after the Tuscan GP, "It’s been 6 months since Breonna Taylor was murdered by policemen, in her own home. Still no justice has been served. We won’t stay silent. #JusticeForBreonnaTaylor"
