Frank de Boer confirmed as the Netherlands' new head coach

Frank de Boer is the new manager of the Dutch national team.

The 50-year old replaces Ronald Koeman who left the job last month to take over at Barcelona.

De Boer's signed a two-year contract with the KNVB, taking him up to and including the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Frank Rijkaard had also been in contention for a return to the position he left after Euro 2000. Peter Bosz was also a candidate, but would have cost too much to extricate from his contract at Bayer Leverkusen.

It's not De Boer's first coaching role with the Netherlands, as he was an assistant to Bert van Marwijk for the side that reached the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa.

De Boer started his own managerial career at Ajax, leading them to four Eredivisie titles.

It's been almost all downhill since, however. He lasted fewer than three-months in charge of Inter in 2016, and was sacked after only 5 games in charge of Crystal Palace in 2017.

Since then, he's rebuilt his reputation somewhat in MLS with Atlanta United.

His last games in charge came in the MLS Is Back tournament, but they were all 1-0 group defeats to Colombus Crew, FC Cincinnati and New York Red Bulls.

De Boer's first game in charge will be a friendly with Mexico, followed by UEFA Nations League games with Bosnia Herzegovina and Italy.
