The former UEFA President and European Championship winning captain, Michel Platini, is reportedly in custody in France over an investigation into the awarding of the 2022 FIFA World Cup to Qatar.
Investigative outlet Mediapart are claiming the ex UEFA President was taken into custody this morning by anti-corruption police in France.
Michel Platini was banned from football for 8 years in 2015 by a FIFA Ethics Committee over a 2 million Swiss francs 'disloyal payment' from former FIFA President Sepp Blatter.
The 63-year-old has always denied wrongdoing.
Michel Platini won the Ballon D'Or 3 years in a row, in 1983, 1984 and 1985.
He captained France to the 1984 European Championship, before scoring the only goal in the ill-fated 1985 European Cup Final, in which Juventus beat Liverpool 1-0. That game was overshadowed by the Heysel Disaster.
Platini served as UEFA President for 8 years, from 2007 and 2015.
Energy rich state Qatar was awarded the 2022 World Cup in December of 2010, a decision was was hugely controversial and generated wide accusations and subsequent evidence of football corruption.
The next World Cup will proceed in November and December of 2022, disrupting the club football calendar.
Mediapart are also reporting that the former Secretary General of the Elysee, Claude Gueant, has also been taken in for questioning, but not arrested.
