It was a triumphant Clare team who lifted the Liam MacCarthy Cup after their All-Ireland win against Cork on Saturday 28th September.
Crucial to their success was Shane O’Donnell who scored three goals and three points in the game. He joined Ray in studio today to talk about that momentous occasion.
Originally told he wouldn’t be starting the game, Shane admitted to Ray that he was “more disappointed that usual” because he’d been putting in the training. Clare manager Davy Fitz had other plans, however, and told Shane that he'd be playing two hours before throw in. Shane joked that it was, “the worse kept secret... I’d say I was the last to know on the panel”. He replaced team mate Darach Horan whom he described as “an amazing player” and credited him with the goal which clinched the win in the end.
A modest Shane was a bit coy when Ray asked him whether he had set a record, but admitted: “I’ve heard it is, I’m not sure now...”.
In defence of critics who said that the team, as a young side, wouldn’t have the experience on the big occasion, Shane kicked back, stating: “Experience is a strange thing; I don’t know if people just use it as an excuse...I wouldn’t pay too much into it”.
