Two years ago the European team needed a " Miracle at Medinah " and the USA will need something similar at Gleneagles. Paul McGinley's team will take a 10-6 lead into the 12 singles matches despite coming out of the morning fourballs second best.

With a 5-3 lead overnight, Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson gave the European side the perfect start with an impressive 3&2 win over Bubba Watson and Matt Kuchar. Stenson and Rose made 10 birdies in a row to finish 12 under par for 16 holes to pick up their third win over the first two days

But that was the only fourball win for McGinley's side as Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan beat Lee Westwood and Jamie Donaldson 4&3 and rookie pair Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed got the better of Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer 5&3.

Ian Poulter redeemed himself by taking a half from the last match - Poulter and Rory McIlroy finished all square with Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler to keep the home side in front by 6 1/2 to 5 1/2.

Fowler hasn't holed much over the first few two days but this was one of the shots of the day:

McGinley kept faith with Westwood and Donaldson in the foursomes and they recorded a 2&1 win over Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar, which gave Westwood his 23rd point in the Ryder Cup.

Sergio Garcia and McIlroy were paired together again and birdies on the 14th and 16th helped give them a 3&2 win over Furyk and Mahan.

Rose and Martin Kaymer won the 12th and 15th to get back to all square against Spieth and Reed and were let off the hook on the 16th when Reed missed a short par putt after the Europeans made six. The US pair won the 17th to take a lead up the last but a birdie on the final hole snatched a half for the holders.

Graeme McDowell and Victor Dubuisson then picked up where they left off yesterday by winning 5&4 against Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler.
