Wexford hurling boss Davy Fitzgerald says he loves "doing things you're not meant to do" in the wake of winning the Leinster Hurling Championship against Kilkenny in Croke Park.

They ran out winners with a goal in it, as the game finished 1-23 to 23 points, to take home their first provincial crown since 2004.

Speaking after the victory, the Clare-native said, "I'm just a lucky individual to experience this with a great bunch. I'm delighted. They're such a hard-working bunch.

"You've no idea what we put them through. We put them through a lot mentally, to be able for a day like today. And I think we were deserving winners."

The 46-year old former goalkeeper also paid credit to the supporters who traveled up to Dublin from the south-east saying, "I'm so happy for the people of Wexford that they get this experience.

"There was one or two times when things didn't go our way, and they haven't thrown the knife in your back and it's very important to get a crowd to stay with you-you've got a great chance of doing something."

In 2013, Fitzgerald led his home-county Clare to an unlikely All-Ireland victory, defeating Munster-rivals Cork in a replay. He has compared his current crop of Wexford players to that Clare squad:

"I actually wanted these boys to win so much. They've been so loyal to me. If I asked them to do something, they'll do it. If you get a team like that, like I did in Clare in '13, you've got a chance of doing something. I love doing things you're not meant to do".

Kilkenny have now lost back-to-back Leinster finals for the first time since 1977 when their current manager Brian Cody was a player. Speaking after the battle in Croke Park - he said he's disappointed:

"We wanted to win the Leinster Final, we didn't win it. So, we're in the All-Ireland quarter-final, that's on in two weeks time - so that's our total focus. We're disappointed of course not to win the game, but that's where we go now.

"Nothing but praise for the players, the effort was there, the genuineness, the honesty. They worked to the very end. Who can predict what's going to happen in a game? There's always one team coming out on top and one team disappointed - and we're disappointed today."
