Whether you have made or lost a fortune following events at the 2015 Cheltenham racing festival you can't dispute how the sport of kings has sent the nations pulses racing. With over 125 million reportedly gambled this week it's also big business. And it's prompted Today FM Breakfast Show listener Niall Kerins from Narraghmore Co.
Kildare to put pen to paper to celebrate the meeting. Niall lives near Moone, Jessica Harrington country, where Jessica also supports the local community by sponsoring Moone Celtic!
Well done on your effort Niall!
A day at the races
The day begins with the alarm clock ring
I dawn my best suit my lucky charms I bring
racing today in Cheltenham town
I hope to avoid that sporting frown
I find it hard to pick the right horse
the method I use does not help of course
it's not the form of the mare nor gelding nor colt
on which I decide to attack the tote
I put all of my wad on that favourite fraud
because I like the name and favour the odds
I feel anxious and wait
take a quick glance at the starting gate
my docket gripped tight in the hope that I might
he's still in with a shout come the final flight
go on you good thing I cry out with might
he's neck and neck with a furlong to go
why does he seem to be going so slow
with the jockeys wip in quick array
a fleeting thought
I should have backed each way
the jockey urges with every stride
he prods and pushes he's got his pride
drives on hard takes a tighter grip
he asks of his charge one more little bit
the finish line is in sight
I'm sure he's got there
it might be tight
the photo showed he was pipped at the post
that fraud that I had favoured the most
I glance at my ticket as it drops to the ground
I think to myself I'll win next time round
a familiar feeling my brow grows tight
that sporting frown has come back to bite
I sometimes end up with no shirt on my back
as I head home from the race track
it's not unusual for me to loose my braces
sometimes I walk home in shoes without laces
oh it is fun a day at the races.
As long as the photos don't appear on Facebook Niall you should be fine!
