The Cork senior football boss has ended a six year term after the Rebels were beaten by 1-16 to 14 points by Dublin in the All-Ireland quarter finals.
Counihan managed Cork to the Sam Maguire Cup in 2010, a first All-Ireland title for the Rebels in 20 years.
