Bronze for Gary O'Donovan at World Cup Regatta

Ireland's Gary O'Donovan has secured a bronze medal in the singles sculls at the World Cup Regatta in Rotterdam.

The Cork man, who is racing in the singles rather than with his brother Paul in the doubles, finished behind Australia’s Sean Murphy who claimed gold and Slovenia's silver medal winner Rajko Hrvat.

“I think this race went well”, said O’Donovan of the result.

“I still need to work on my fitness, and that showed in the last 750. But it’s a work in progress. I came here to prove to myself and to the selectors that I still deserve a chance, that I can fight for a spot in the double sculls.”

Four Irish crews have also booked their places in 'A' finals.

Fintan McCarthy and Paul O'Donovan advanced to tomorrow's lightweight double sculls final by finishing second in their semi-final this morning.

It's the first time that McCarthy has been paired with Olympic silver medalist O'Donovan.

Philip Doyle and Ronan Byrne won their men's double semi while women's cull pair Monika Dukarska and Aileen Crowley progressed to their final.
