Big boost for Welsh rugby as Rhys Webb confirms his return

New Wales head coach Wayne Pivac has received a huge boost with the news that scrum-half Rhys Webb is to return to a Welsh region.

The 31-year-old, who has 33 caps to his name, has confirmed he is to return to the country from Toulon in the summer of 2020.

The French side have agreed to release Webb from the final year of his three-year deal for personal reasons, with the player eager to return to his family, who are still based in Wales.

It hasn't been revealed which Welsh region the scrum-half will sign for, but reports indicate he's most likely to rejoin the Ospreys, for whom he played for 11 years.

Confirming his departure this afternoon, Webb said:

“I would like to thank the club for the hospitality and support it has given me since I joined last season. It has been and remains an honour to play for this great club.

"I loved all the time I spent here and I would especially like to thank my teammates, coaches, supporters and all those who are now for me as family and lifelong friends."

"It was difficult for me to be away from my family and my young children. Now I’m determined to give my best for the club until the end of the season and I hope we get the wins the club deserves," he added.

Webb's move to France had ruled him out of international rugby since 2017, with the Welsh Rugby Union introducing a 60-cap threshold for players based abroad who wished to be considered for international selection.

Since joining Toulon, the Scarlets' Gareth Davies has established himself as the first-choice 9 for Wales under Warren Gatland.
