It always seems like you need new tyres just as you're coming up to pay day.
It can feel like a big unwanted expense but defective tyres can be a contributing factor in fatal or serious road collisions.
The Road Safety Authority estimates that defective tyres could be a contributory factor in as many as 14 deaths each year.
This Monday, 7 October, is Tyre Safety Day and as part of this ITIA are offering free tyre safety checks.
From now until Saturday 12 October, drivers can visit any ITIA dealer nationwide for a free tyre safety check, including a pressure check and tread depth inspection.

What You Need To Know
- Under or over inflated tyres effect grip, handling and braking performance
- Tyres that are too soft or too hard result in irregular wear of the tread and reduced mileage.

Sue O’Neill, CEO of the ITIA, says: “Tyres are the only part of your vehicle in contact with the road and their importance is often overlooked.
"If your tyres show signs of deterioration, you should have them replaced immediately With 120,000 tyres already failing NCT in the first six months of this year, it’s evident that drivers are not in the habit of regularly checking their tyres."
