Roddy Doyle's newest book, Charlie Savage, is out now.
It is a collection of his weekly Charlie Savage columns for the Irish Independent, which follow a man trying to keep up with the modern world.
Doyle describes the character as "cheerfully baffled by modernity", and this is something he can relate to in real life. Although he is on Facebook, he admits that Twitter "has no appeal whatsoever".
On his previous visit to The Last Word, he talked about his new film Rosie, which deals with the theme of homelessness.
He now admits that the film hasn't quite had the impact he wanted, as the homelessness crisis has worsened.
"Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be the priority that it was when the film was coming out."
He thinks the loss of bedsits and public housing has had a negative effect.
"In part it's about the way western cities are developing; working class people can't afford to live in them anymore, and there's no structure there for them."
