Pfizer has said its COVID-19 vaccine is more than 90% effective following trials.
The efficacy rate is well above the 50% effectiveness required by the US Food and Drug Administration, and there is no evidence of serious side effects.
The company now expects to produce up to 1.3 billion doses of the vaccine in 2021.
Dr Anne Moore, Senior Lecturer in the UCC School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, joined us with more information on the vaccine and why today is being described by Pfizer as "a great day for science and humanity".
