The government has proposed the Human Tissue Bill, which would introduce an opt-out system of consent for deceased organ donation.
Colin White, National Projects Manager with the Irish Kidney Association, joined us to explain how the current system works.
The families of potential donors are approached to give their consent, regardless of whether the person has an organ donor card or not.
This would still be the case under the new proposal, unless the potential donor has specifically opted out, and Colin says he would like the Health Minister Simon Harris to introduce an opt-in system as well.
Simon Harris also joined us to give his response to this and other issues facing the Health Service such as the idea of mandatory vaccination and the mortuary conditions at University Hospital Waterford.
