Digestive system issues such as heartburn and acid reflux are extremely common, with one in ten Irish people experiencing them daily.
But what causes them, and what can you do about it?
Dr Ray Walley joined us for our weekly medical consultation to explain more.
The burning sensation associated with heartburn or reflux is caused by acid from the stomach making its way into the oesophagus.
Common causes include not eating regular meals, eating rich or spicy food, eating too much, or when experienced at night, going to bed too soon after eating.
Some simple ways of preventing these problems and promoting good digestion are chewing your food properly, taking meals with water, eating small meals regularly, not eating too late and allowing your system time to digest food before going to bed.
