In the first of a three-part series on relationships we were joined by Helen Vaughan, psychotherapist with Maynooth Counselling, to find out how to manage conflict.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is a metaphor for four things people do in conflict with their partners that are detrimental to relationships. They are:

  • Criticism
  • Contempt
  • Defensiveness
  • Stonewalling

Helen has four tips for resolving conflict:

  • Use "I" statements when raising issues with your partner - say how you feel.
  • Describe the situation without making accusations or pointing the finger.
  • What are your needs to feel better?
  • Take time away from the situation and come back to it when you feel calm.
