In the first of a three-part series on relationships we were joined by Helen Vaughan, psychotherapist with Maynooth Counselling, to find out how to manage conflict.
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is a metaphor for four things people do in conflict with their partners that are detrimental to relationships. They are:
- Criticism
- Contempt
- Defensiveness
- Stonewalling
Helen has four tips for resolving conflict:
- Use "I" statements when raising issues with your partner - say how you feel.
- Describe the situation without making accusations or pointing the finger.
- What are your needs to feel better?
- Take time away from the situation and come back to it when you feel calm.
