Many of us are short-sighted, but there are other more serious vision problems that are important to guard against.
Dr Ray Walley joined us for our weekly medical consultation to explain how we can look after our eyes.
It's important to be aware of any eye problems that may run in your family, such as glaucoma.
Other common issues include macular degeneration and cataracts, which mainly affect older people, and retinal detachment, which is considered a medical emergency and can lead to serious complications if left untreated. Those who are short-sighted are at higher risk of this.
Type 2 diabetes can also cause eye problems. Therefore if you are diabetic, you should make sure you have regular screenings to check that your vision is healthy.
Wearing sunglasses reduces your chances of developing macular degeneration and cataracts. The better the glasses are at filtering out harmful UV rays, the more beneficial this will be to your sight in the long run.
