A drop in testosterone is part of the natural ageing process for men, but if levels are too low it can result in negative physical and psychological conditions and affect quality of life.
Testosterone deficiency affects about two in every 100 men aged 40 to 79, and about five in 100 men aged 70 to 79.
The signs can be similar to conditions such as anxiety, depression, hypothyroidism and anaemia, with symptoms including fatigue, sleep disturbance, irritability and low mood, reduced motivation, reduced physical endurance and muscle mass and reduced libido.
Dr Brian Higgins, GP at Galway Primary Care, joined us for our weekly health slot to explain more about the causes of testosterone deficiency and how it can be treated.
