Is it ever acceptable to smack a child?
In the latest issue of the Irish Medical Journal, Professor Alf Nicholson of Temple Street University Children's Hospital argues that smacking a child is not an effective way to alter their behaviour.
He also cites research from the United States which shows that smacking children is linked to long-term harmful effects in later life, including suicide attempts, moderate to heavy drinking and drug use.
