It has emerged that only half of healthcare workers are vaccinated against the flu.
Dr John Cuddihy, interim director of the HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre, told The Last Word that there is a 53% uptake among those who work in our hospitals and healthcare facilities.
Between 250 and 500 people die from flu-related complications per season. These deaths mainly occur in people considered to be at high risk, such as those with certain medical conditions.
We were also joined by Katie Healy-Nolan, whose daughter has a life-limiting illness. She spoke to us about the importance of getting vaccinated to ensure vulnerable people in our communities are protected.
