David Curtin, CEO of the IEDR (IE Domain Registry) joined Conall on the Sunday Business Show this week us to talk about the recent changes on domain registration and the findings from their reports on the makeup of the database and "digital health" of Ireland's SME Community.
David told Conall that it is now easier than ever to register an .ie online address a new ‘liberalisation’ policy, which came into force on the 21st of March.
The change are said to transform the customer experience, making it easier and faster for individuals, businesses and community groups to register a .ie domain.
From today, it’s now easier and faster to register a .ie online address. Anyone with a connection to Ireland can register any available .ie domain on a first-come, first-served basis. âž¡ï¸ https://t.co/7S4bKVYFmr

Those registering a .ie domain will no longer need a ‘claim to the name’—but they’ll still need to prove their connection to Ireland.
David noted that this is positive move, especially for SMEs and start-ups that previously may have struggled with the administrative steps required to prove their claim to a particular .ie domain name.
They will still need to prove their connection to Ireland, but it will take less time and hassle to get online and set up with an identifiably Irish website and email address.
Previously, an individual or business registering a website had to prove that they had a valid claim to the desired name and a real connection to the island of Ireland.
