Keeping hens is a great hobby for all the family and it's becoming more popular - you get some lovely pets and they give you breakfast in return. Recently Shirley Walsh in Waterford got an eggs-traordinary surprise from her hen!
Shirley told Mairead how her 10-year-old son Odhran got an incubator and some eggs for his birthday last year and has been rearing 3 hens himself since they hatched in June.
His favourite hen, Brownie, has been laying bigger eggs than the others but this week she laid an absolutely massive one!
Shirley measured the egg and it's more than 8 inches around from top to bottom - about 3 or 4 times the size of your average egg!
She puts the size down to Brownie being a very happy hen - her husband Richie and Odhran built a hatch on wheels for the hens so they get to move around every few days and have fresh grass, as well as being so well cared for.
